University of Plymouth Student Hub Space Design

Project Brief

This project focused on redesigning the Student Hub at the University of Plymouth to better address the needs of students while maintaining functionality for various university services. The primary objective was to create a welcoming and efficient environment that balances professional and student-focused spaces.

Design Intentions

The goal was to enhance the experience for both students and staff by addressing key spatial and functional challenges. My approach involved creating clear distinctions between services such as Student Services and Career Services while ensuring these spaces remained accessible and flexible. Emphasis was placed on optimizing privacy, accessibility, and comfort to facilitate sensitive conversations within a secure and welcoming atmosphere.

Key Design Features

  1. Reception Area

The reception was divided into two distinct sections, each color-coded to clearly differentiate Student Services from Career Services. This design included wheelchair-friendly counters to ensure accessibility for all users.

  1. Waiting Area

The waiting area was designed to offer comfort and acoustic isolation, using high-backed seating to reduce noise and maintain privacy. The versatility of this space allows it to function as a meeting area when needed.

  1. Student Services

The design incorporated semi-private cubicles for general assistance and fully private spaces for sensitive consultations. Acoustic panels and strategically placed storage solutions were utilized to enhance privacy and reduce the visibility of computer screens.

  1. Career Services

The Career Services section included soundproofed cubicles for confidential discussions, along with larger booths to accommodate group meetings or private conversations. This flexibility was intended to support various interaction types.

  1. Staff Amenities

Additional amenities were included, such as a mini fridge, microwave, and secure lockers, to enhance the functionality and comfort of staff areas. Ample storage was integrated into service areas to improve efficiency.

Design Outcomes and Key Learnings

This project was not solely about optimizing space but also about enhancing the overall user experience by deeply understanding the needs of both students and staff. Throughout the project, I gained valuable experience in:

  • Addressing real-world design challenges related to space planning, privacy, and accessibility.
  • Developing skills in creating versatile and adaptable environments that effectively cater to diverse user needs.
  • Applying innovative problem-solving to balance functionality with aesthetics, resulting in improved efficiency and user satisfaction.
