Alternative Media Project: Reimagining Armada Way, Plymouth

This group project focused on redeveloping Armada Way in Plymouth, UK, using innovative media to broaden our skillset. We created an interactive model in Unreal Engine 5, using progressive levels to visualize alternative versions of the site. Our approach was to gradually reveal design ideas that reflect the needs and aspirations of Plymouth’s residents.

Project Approach:

The project involved crafting a “game-like” experience that allowed us to demonstrate our design concepts interactively. Through layered levels, we showcased our methods, ideas, and the rationale behind them, presenting a clear visual narrative of how the site could evolve. The objective was to represent what the people of Plymouth genuinely desire for the space.

Community-Driven Design:

To ensure the design was truly community-centered, we interviewed a broad spectrum of Armada Way users, including:

  • Business owners and workers
  • Elderly visitors
  • People who use the site to pass through
  • Occasional visitors

This diverse feedback allowed us to understand various perspectives, ultimately guiding our design decisions to reflect preferences that resonated with the community.

Key Design Improvements Addressed:

  • Color Diversity: Introduced a vibrant palette to counter the site’s existing monotone aesthetic.
  • Vegetation and Greenery: Integrated more green spaces and natural elements to enhance visual appeal and encourage relaxation.
  • Activity Levels: Created areas encouraging social engagement and recreational use.
